Owasso photographer Shana Davis is making the most of her time behind the camera.
Her passion for capturing the perfect shot has led her to earn a Master of Photographer degree from the Professional Photographers of America (PPA).
PPA, founded in 1869, is the world’s largest nonprofit association for professional photographers, with more than 30,000 members in 54 countries.
Davis, owner of Shana Davis Photography, was recognized with the prestigious title at the organization’s annual convention, Imaging USA, held Sunday-Tuesday, Jan. 4-16, in Nashville, Tenn.
PPA’s Master of Photography degree is awarded to individuals with superior photography skills demonstrated through participation in photographic competition, advanced education and service to the industry.
“Earning my Master of Photography degree with PPA, along with my CPP certification several years ago, have been the driving force behind my professional development and my motivation to be the best for my clients,” Davis said.
In order to receive her master’s, Davis had to earn at least 25 merit, or “point,” badges through PPA in the areas of exhibition, speaking and service. This has involved her attending and competing in numerous conventions, seminars, workshops and schools throughout her extended career.
The award-winning photographer has been working behind a camera since 1994 and specializes in high school seniors, family and children’s portraits. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in graphic design and photography as well as a certification through the Professional Photographic Certification Commission.
“At each level of achievement, my success has been more than a ribbon or medallion; it was noticeable growth in the quality of my images,” Davis said. “I believe in continuing education throughout your career, which allows you to strive for higher standards in your profession.”
James Yates, communications specialist for PPA, said the opportunity for one to earn a Master of Photography through PPA is an honorary accolade that, for many, takes several years to attain. Likewise, only 78 photographers earned the title last year, with two of them being in Oklahoma.
“Photography is not a static industry; new techniques and technologies appear constantly,” he said. “By earning her Master of Photography, Shana has demonstrated she is keeping up with the advancing industry. Her degree will show her clients that she knows her stuff!”
